Knowing how to figure out your tire size is an important part of owning a vehicle. It’s also important for getting an accurate quote! Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all option when it comes to tires. Since vehicle manufacturers engineer their models with different wheel specs, it’s important to know the correct tire size for your vehicle. This guide will give you everything you need to get the right size for your vehicle. There are two easy ways to get your tire size.

1. Get the tire size off the tire itself

Every tire has its size and specifications listed on the sidewall. However, they’re usually printed in black on black. You may need to clean your tire in order to get a proper reading. We find it helpful to use the light on your phone to shine on the sidewall and illuminate the text. You’re looking for a series of three numbers here. Almost all tire size measurements begin with a three digit number followed by two two-digit numbers. You’ll find that first two numbers are most often separated by a slash and the second and third numbers are most often separated by an “R”. For example, “225/55R17”.

2. Get the tire size off the inside of the door (Recommended)

Vehicle manufacturers that sell vehicles in Canada have a list of certain specifications to abide by. While these specifications give manufacturers the freedom to choose different tire and wheel sizes for their vehicles, they are required to list the correct tire size on the inside of the driver’s side door. We recommend using this reading. Sometimes, the wrong size tire can be installed on your vehicle already. We see this most often in vehicles that have been purchased used, in a private sale (not from a dealer). If you have the wrong tires installed and you read the size from the tires, you’re still reading the wrong size. It’s always best to double-check the manufacturers’ spec using the inside of the door. The example below is from a Toyota Corolla:

Keep in mind, that even though you may have the same model vehicle as your neighbor, appropriate tire sizes can vary even at the trim level. Most models have larger wheel sizes as you move up the trim levels. Larger wheels mean larger tires. Therefore, you might have the same model as your neighbor but still need different tires, because of the trim.
